How to compile avetana on Linux

AMD 64 (x86_64) binaries:

If you have an AMD 64 system, you can download these already compiled versions of the library.
You only need one file, pick the one that matches your bluez version.

avetanaBT for bluez 2.x

avetanaBT for bluez 3.x

Requisites:

The requisites to compile avetanabt are:

• Java SDK, (not just the JRE) >= 1.4.2
• make, gcc, autoconf, (commonly used compile utils)
• bluetooth libraries.
• the avetanabt package from sourceforge, avetanabt

I have successfully installed it on a Xubuntu Dapper 6.06, this tutorial should work exactly the same in the other flavours (ubuntu, kubuntu, edubuntu).

Install all the the needed packages from synaptic, which are

• sun-java5-jdk
• build-essentials
• autoconf
• bluez
• bluez-utils
  
• libbluetooth1-dev
• libbluetooth1

Unpack and configure the installer

Then we have unpack the avetana package:

tar -xzvf avetanabt-20060413.tgz

and edit the file "envvariables". In this file you should edit three lines that look something like:

• export JDK_HOME="/path/to_it"
• export JDK_PLATFORM="/path/to_it"
• export BIN_DIR="/path/to_it"

The JDK_HOME in ubuntu should be: /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun
in other distros can be something like: /opt/java-sdk-1.5.0

Have a look to make sure everything is where it's supposed to be.
The JDK_PLATFORM is the same path but adding an ending "/include", this looks like:

/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/include

And the last path is the folder where you want to have the compiled binaries, I'm going to let you choose this one.

Before compiling we need to avoid a bug in the avetanabt package that doesn't link properly the references.

In the JDK_PLATFORM folder you will find another one called "linux", you need to copy all the files in here to its parent folder, example:

cp /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/include/linux/* /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/include/

(You'll probably need to use "sudo" or the root account to do this).

Compilation

To compile, first we make sure that we have permissions:

chmod +x install

and we execute it,

sh install

we will obtain a file called "avetanaBT.jar" in the BIN_DIR, you need to copy this file to the subfolder "lib" under "ValhallaChat" installation folder.

cp avetanabt/binaries/avetanaBT.jar ValhallaChat/lib

and execute:

java -jar ValhallaChat/ValhallaDesktop.jar

Now you can start chatting.
